There is not much of a learning curve on the later versions of Filemaker but since the OP indicates familiarity with databases it might be an option. One weakness in my database is when doing a search with a simple song title only, ie Cole Porter's 'Love For Sale ' all track titles with 'Love', 'For' and 'Sale' show up. I have looked at some of the packaged databases but after entering my own data for years and with incorporating scripts I found it easier to copy and paste from sources such as Discogs and even this forum. There should be an app allowing automatic data entry for the basic information from third parties on iTunes. Their web site provides more detail and is helpful in importing or converting files and many other hurdles. It would be economical to buy an older version that runs at 32 bit.

The current version of Filemaker Pro runs on 64 bit software. Other file formats can be imported into the database. When I began my database there was no auto complete to speed things up but the text editor allows me to replace a code or acronym (ie RSR was replaced by Rolling Stones Records). The layout can also reflect your needs and is completely under your control.įilemaker allows the use of scripts and templates which can be used to automate data entry. Adding a field is done by dragging and dropping an already defined field but no line code must be done. Though all my audio formats are in one file it only takes a minute to create and import a specific media such as 12' singles into it's own separate database. I had at one time included printed media but now have that in it's own file. My music collection comprised of records (7', 10', 12 singles and albums), tape (cassette, open reel, video tape) and optical media (CD, SACD, DVD, DVD Audio, Laserdisc) that is in a single file. The strength in building your own database is allowing it to reflect your needs.

I have dozens of fields for artist, labels, composer, arranger, title, track length, musicians, producers, engineers (recording and mastering), recording venue, country, year, media speed, stamper/matrix etc. My only option was to build my own using Filemaker (a 'flat file') on a PC computer.

Back in the mid '90s most of the database offered were relatively useless and simple.
